August 21.--In the morning the guard was drawn out on the little bridge, or Ma-tow, adjoining our boats, and the whole embassy went on shore with some state and ceremony, to view the place prepared for it. The Koong kwdn stood about one hundred yards from our boats, and appeared to be generally appropriated to the use of officers of government. It was arranged that we should continue to sleep in our boats, but dine on shore. At about half past four we accordingly sat down comfortably at a table in the open air, under the projecting roof of the chief part of the building, which was supported by wooden pillars, and hung with lamps.
