Excerpt from Select Poems
IN the study of poetry, appreciation is of first importance. This cannot be
gained if the pupil must continually interrupt his reading to turn to a
dictionary. With this in mind, the introduction to each poem has been carefully
prepared to present the situation; and the text has been freely annotated in
order to furnish a miniature dictionary ready to the hand of the pupil.
Many pupils have no dictionaries at home, and have little, if any, time for
study in school. For these reasons words are explained in the notes that would
otherwise have been omitted.
