Francis H. Straus II

This second edition on prostate biopsy interpretation is part of a series that includes biopsies of the breast, endometrium, bladder and digestive tract. It includes descriptions and illustrations of normal, inflammatory, tumor-like, benign, and malignant prostatic conditions. It is complete in its coverage of the pathology of this organ, which has been the center of rising concern as the source of a very common cancer in men. Noting the rapidly expanding number of prostate needle biopsies performed, this book discusses and illustrates the proper diagnosis of malignancy and its prognostic significance. This new edition has added material on interpreting minimal adenocarcinoma in needle biopsies, prostatic intra-epithelial neoplasia and several newer diagnostic categories such as mesonephric hyperplasia and mucinous metaplasia. This book is aimed at the practicing surgical pathologist who daily faces prostatic needle biopsy interpretation. Secondarily, it is of use to surgical pathologists in training and urologic surgeons wishing to understand and better care for their patients. The author is the leading international expert on the subject and has at his disposal a large volume of prostatic pathology to work from. Using 16 chapters with highlighted text subdivisions and excellent black-and-white photomicrographs with occasional tables and line drawings, the author thoroughly covers the subject. There are up-to-date references at the end of each chapter and a moderately long index at the back. Arbitrarily placed in the middle are 39 color photomicrographs illustrating H&E and immunohistochemical stained pathology. This is a very important volume for all practicing surgical pathologistsand pathology teaching centers. It presents the current state-of-the-art in this area of diagnostic surgical pathology and should be within arm's reach for all who need it. Libraries should also add it to their collections as it represents the most up-to-date information about prostate pathology and malignancy.

Reviewer:Asraa L. Namiq, M.D(University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description:This book addresses the rapidly changing knowledge in regard to prostate pathology and clinical correlates. Without a doubt, the most striking improvement over the second edition is the CD-ROM containing over 1,700 color images.
Purpose:The purpose of the book is to provide the practical, need-to-know information about the diagnosis and prognosis of prostate biopsy. These worthy objectives have been met.
Audience:The book is written for pathology residents, practicing general pathologists, and urology pathologists. The authors are credible authorities in the subject matter.
Features:The authors cover gross anatomy and histology of the prostate; technique, sampling, and processing of the biopsy, as well as clinical correlation with the biopsy. Cancer diagnosis, reporting, grading are included. The best features are the chapter on the mimickers of adenocarcinoma and the CD-ROM. The only shortcoming, as the authors state in the preface, is the lack of information about molecular pathology of the prostatic adenocarcinoma. However, these studies have not yet yielded information that has been used for clinical practice.
Assessment:It excellent, well written book covers the practical, need-to-know information about the diagnosis and prognosis of prostate biopsy. The quality of the pictures on the CD-ROM are supberb; this feature by itself justifies replacing the second edition. This is an essential book for urologic pathologists and surgical pathologists, whether in practice or in training.

Booknews

A text for pathologists who evaluate biopsy material from the prostate. It contains an extensive number of photographs, some now in color, which help pathologists in their day-to-day practice with difficult and unusual lesions, as well as common problems encountered in prostate pathology. This revised edition has greatly expanded the section on diagnosis of limited prostate cancer on needle biopsy; discusses prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) in much greater detail; emphasizes the mimickers of cancers on needle biopsy; and describes new entities, including antiandrogen effect, foamy-gland cancer, pseudosarcomatous fibromyxoid tumor, paraganglia tissue, mesonephric hyperplasia, partial atrophy, and mucinous metaplasia. Booknews

This book/CD-ROM provides essential information to pathologists evaluating biopsy samples for prostate disease, addressing both common and unusual conditions and covering classification, clinical features, prognosis, and clinical evaluation of lesions and other pathologies.
