Editorial Reviews -

Kierkegaard in a Nutshell

Library Journal

These four volumes, meant as introductions for lay readers, consist of brief passages taken from the writings of each philosopher, gathered together under broad chapter headings. Each book is prefaced with a short introduction that provides biographical material on the philosopher and a thumbnail analysis of his or her ideas. Though the purpose of the series is laudable, serious doubts must be entertained about this set; the general introduction, found in each volume, states that "Most philosophy nowadays is served in the form of brief summaries, written by commentators," a claim that is patently false. Moreover, it is not possible to obtain a true sense of the thought of any philosopher by reading of brief snippets lifted from that philosopher's writings unless a thorough, balanced analysis is also present, which is not the case here. Finally, the introductions written for each volume also raise questions. In the Socrates volume, for example, the editor broadly states that "The assumption that homosexuality, which borders on paedophilia, is not only acceptable, but also quite normal and desirable, is one way in which the culture of ancient Athens differs from our own." The neophyte reader, with no philosophical background, would do better to look elsewhere for an introduction to the discipline or to specific writers. Not recommended.Terry Skeats, Bishop's Univ., Lennoxville, Quebec
