Description

The International Political system since the beginning of 1970's has registered a marked disintegration of the cold war coalition. It has also witnessed serious challenges to the competence and authority of nation-state institutions. The challenges posed to these institutions have been most strident in the World countries and this challenge was visibly manifest in the case of Bangladesh.
Emergence of Bangladesh following the disintegration of Pakistan had an impact on the international power structure in South Asia. It has transformed the political landscape of the region. India played a politico-military role in the Bangladesh is very problematic even today. The present study is a modest attempt to examine the attitudes and approaches of various Bangladesh leaders who assumed power, till date, towards India and focuses on various bilateral issues which bedeviled the relationship between the two countries, the efforts made by them to solve them and their outcomes, during the last 35 years. The economic relations forged between them as well as other issue like Farakka barrage dispute, illegal migrants from Bangladesh to India and its ramifications in the state like West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya are also discussed. It may noted that, considering India's north eastern region, India's relation with SAARC, Geographical proximity and economic and trade ties, a strong bilateral relationship between India and Bangladesh will augur well for the future of South Asia.
