About the Book: Don't Go Away. We'll Be Right Back - The Oops and Downs of Advertising

A book on advertising for all those who think programmes interrupt commercials.

Get valuable insights into the world of Advertising! Such as:

  • A Copywriter's most dreaded word is 'typo'. Like this one that crept into a hotel's hoarding design: 'Our restaurant has a bra attached'.
  • Service people usually get married in the morning. That way, if the marriage doesn't work out, they still have the rest of the day to catch up with their work.
  • Pitches happen when the client realises it's been a long time since he went to the circus, so sends word around town that he's looking for a new agency.

The Oops and Downs of Advertising, will bring you up close with the world of what this business of selling a product or an idea is all about. All in her funny, witty manner, befitting the business she is in. Coming from Indu, who worked with JWT, starting off as a Copy Trainee who moved on to become VP and executive creative director of the agency, this is a book worth reading.

A pun a minute, replete with smart one-liners and word play, the book will take you through a day in the life of an ad professional, from the copy writer to the art director to the client servicing professional. Starting off on a chapter on 'A brief history of the origins of advertising', Indu likens the gods of the Hindu mythology to the gods of the advertising business. Brahma, the worldwide creative director, who created the concept of reincarnation, for instance... "Even today, campaigns rejected by one client are recycled and presented to another."

Indu gets better as the book progresses. While the initial chapters (such as the one on the origins of advertising) may strike one as trying hard to be too cool and funny, the book gets genuinely funny as she talks about a day in the life of an advertising professional, for instance, or about how to shoot an ad film, directed at the ad film director. While being funny, it is also very true.

Sample this for instance: "All ad filmmakers are inspired by Polish feature film directors, usually called Kaminski, Zuawalski or Travinski, whose brilliance in black and white narrative is paralleled only by the sublimity of their iconoclastic sense of muted and unrestrained direction..."

The chapter on the client has great insights, and so does the chapter on pitching for new businesses. "Clients are people who are always 'about to leave town', and that's why they always have to see and approve an ad before they leave for the airport." Ask any harried copywriter or client servicing professional and he will vouch for this one.

The book also takes you through the best paying jobs in advertising. The voice-over artiste, model, hand model, video-parlour DVD rentals, make-up artiste, tea boy, professional grandmother and set- B design maker. Then there are formulae used to come up with ideas (just add your client's name and stir).

The author is talking about some (there are lazy people everywhere) who use "familiar lines and visuals from their coveted m cookbook of the safe and sound and tried and tested." These include 'Beat the Heat', "a useful headline to know that can bail you out of approximately 350 summer-related products," and is true not just of copy writers, but headline writers in journalism too!

The book is brilliantly illustrated by Bangalorean Paul Fernandes. Don't miss the footnotes in this book, the 'Overhead at..." series.

About the Author: Indu Balachandran

Indu Balachandran was raised in Bangalore, on an unhealthy diet of Mad magazines since she was eight. A gold medal in journalism landed a job at Deccan Herald, but the chief reporter politely suggested she join an ad agency, seeing her excessive use of exaggeration. Indu joined JWT, moving from Copy Trainee to Vice President and Executive Creative Director, over twenty-nine years. She's won several advertising awards.
