Contemporary Extensile Exposures in Orthopaedic Surgery

Edward Abraham

This textbook deals with the surgical exposures of the spine and limbs as they apply to orthopedic surgery. The purpose is to present safe surgical approaches that avoid injury to tissue blood circulation and innervation. These important objectives were met. Both authors are very qualified surgeons in this field. The line drawings are by Russell S. Jones. The book is divided into 14 chapters based on anatomical regions. Each chapter is headed by informative sections on general principles, complications, and surgical anatomy, The first three chapters deal with surgical incisions of the spine. Then there are the classical sections to other regions, such as the humerus, forearm, hand, hip, knee, and so on. The chapter on the pelvis is very well done. The references are few and highly selective. The index is thorough and user friendly. Don't expect to find any eponyms, such as ""Smith-Peterson approach to hip,"" in the index. This text builds on the gold standard textbook on extensile exposures in Orthopedics by Arnold K. Henry, Extensile Exposure Applied to Limb Surgery. The authors are to be commended for paying close attention to important details. Our examining board is paying greater attention to the importance of surgical anatomy. This text has fulfilled this need for residents preparing for their boards and orthopedic surgeons taking recertification exams. I find it most interesting that Russell Jones is not acknowledged for his drawings in the book, in which his work dominates. It appears that the illustrations are anatomically correct, although we do not know if the drawings are based on anatomical dissections, intraoperative observations, and/orother anatomical texts. I very highly recommend the purchase of this work to the orthopedic surgeon and resident. Also, all medical science libraries are encouraged to get this important ""bestseller"" work.

A description of surgical approaches modifying the "internervousplane" dissection of Arnold K. Henry. The contributors presentincisions designed to minimize damage to the blood supply to the softtissues, elaborating on the principles of compartment resection thatallow the preservation of a functional limb with minimalcomplications.
