Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: William Miles, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This pocket-sized review of psychiatry is part of the Blueprints Clinical Cases series for medical students. The previous edition was published in 2002.
Purpose: This is a study guide for medical students to use during their psychiatry rotation or for preparation for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 2 or 3.
Audience: Medical students who are either currently on their psychiatry rotation or studying for the USMLE are the intended audience.
Features: The majority of the book is composed of 60 clinical cases, divided into categories such as adult inpatient, emergency room, consultation liaison, etc. Each case starts with a chief complaint, followed by history of present illness, and a mental status exam. Several "thought questions" are then proposed, followed by a thorough discussion of the case. Review questions with answers round out each case, along with references. The rest of the book is composed of 100 USMLE-style questions and answers. At the beginning of the book is a list of abbreviations, and at the end, an index. There are no illustrations, but several tables are scattered throughout.
Assessment: The Blueprint Series is well known in medical education, and this latest edition of psychiatry cases is quite good. The cases are relevant, and the thought questions allow students to contemplate the important points of each case before pursuing the answer. The discussions are thorough, and the main points are explained well. The USMLE-style questions at the end of the book will help students gauge their understanding of psychiatric disease.
