Reviewer:Rita K. Getz, PhD(Midwestern University)
Description:This book uses an outline format to highlight gross anatomical content.
Purpose:The author intends this book to he used by medical students "for rapid access to information and to facilitate learning." It is not intended as a stand-alone text for a gross anatomy course and it is not in sufficient detail for extensive use in a first-year medical school gross anatomy course.
Audience:The book is written for medical students, and those who might appreciate it most are medical students in a surgical rotation who need a quick reminder of a structure or its neurovascular supply.
Features:The author uses a regional approach to review anatomy. Some of the information is presented quite well in tables. The text is predominantly in outline format, with figure references from the 2nd edition of Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy (Icon Learning Systems 1997). Brief clinical correlates are interspersed throughout the outlines, and are printed in green ink to distinguish them from the basic facts in the outlines. The index is extensive for a book of this type and easy to use. A question and answer section is located at the back of the book. The questions are written from a clinical perspective with two to nine choices. The answers include an explanation of the correct choice. According to the preface, "simple line illustrations serving as reminders of basic concepts" are included in the book. These drawings are of poor quality with inconsistent labeling and are not to scale. For example, cross-sections through the arm and forearm on page 227 show neurovascular bundles (unlabeled) which are bigger than the bones. There is no identifiable logic concerning which topics are and are not illustrated. For example, page 283 illustrates the location of the patella, a straightforward concept, and does not provide illustration for more difficult topics like brachial plexus. These black-and-white illustrations serve no useful purpose. Of concern to the reader who expects accuracy in a medical book are the errors in this book. Some errors may be due to the oversimplified manner in which most topics are approached, and some may simply be errors of omission, but there are errors nonetheless. For example, page 39 states that nucleus cuneatus and nucleus gracilis of the medulla carry pain and temperature information from the spinal cord.
Assessment:The premise of the book la a good one. One concern is the tie-in to the 2nd edition of Netter's. Readers will have to purchase both books to get full use from this book. Any subsequent editions of the Netter atlas may necessitate a subsequent edition of this book. The greater concern is the amount of factual error in this book. It should have been edited more carefully, as the student who reads this book may learn some anatomical facts incorrectly. If the errors are corrected for a subsequent edition, this could be a useful resource for students.
